February 20, 2025, the NCBW100 GCC Education committee hosted Purpose and Power Through Quilting and Storytelling, featuring Regina Abernathy M.Ed. Quilt-making and storytelling are integral to the African American community, serving as powerful tools for preserving history, culture, and identity. Quilts often depict significant events, convey ancestral stories, and embody symbolic meanings. They act as historical records, passed down through generations, fostering a sense of connection and continuity. Storytelling, whether through oral tradition or written narratives, plays a crucial role in transmitting cultural values, wisdom, and experiences. Both practices offer a means of resistance and resilience, celebrating heritage while confronting past and present challenges. Together, they strengthen communal bonds and ensure that African American legacies endure.
