Caring for the Caregiver: A Conversation We Need to Have

Caregivers are often the first to show up and the last to leave. Whether caring for a child, aging parent, spouse, grandchild, veteran, or loved one with health challenges, caregivers give so much of themselves every day. Yet too often, their own well-being is placed on the back burner.

Recognizing this growing need, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Greater Cleveland Chapter’s Health Committee, led by Chair Tanjulla Tyson-Wearren, is partnering with community organizations to host a Sister Circle Women’s Health Initiative focused on caregiver burnout. The event will provide a supportive environment where caregivers can learn practical strategies for self-care, stress management, financial wellness, and emotional resilience.

A featured guest speaker will be attorney and advocate Jasmine Chandler of Chandler Advocacy Group. Chandler will provide valuable information about programs administered by the Social Security Administration, including disability benefits, Medicare, and other resources that can help caregivers and their families navigate complex systems of support. Her expertise will offer attendees practical guidance and answers to questions that many families face every day.

In addition to educational resources, participants can enjoy a free meal, fellowship, line dancing, and opportunities to connect with others who understand the unique challenges of caregiving. The event serves as a reminder that caring for the caregiver is essential to the health and well-being of our entire community.

The Greater Cleveland Chapter of NCBW remains committed to advancing health equity and empowering women through education, advocacy, and service. Through programs like this, the organization continues to create spaces where women can find support, information, and encouragement.

Caregiving is an act of love. Taking care of yourself is one, too.
