Empowering the Next Generation

On Friday, September 6, 2024, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Greater Cleveland Chapter (NCBW-GCC), and the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Cuyahoga County Section (NCNW) joined forces to host a High School Voter Education and Registration Training at Garrett Morgan School of Leadership and Innovation (GMSHLI).

The event was part of the national Rock the Vote initiative — a movement to educate and empower young people on the importance of civic engagement and their right to vote. Using the Democracy Classroom curriculum, students explored the history of voting rights, learned about voter registration, and participated in interactive discussions that addressed common myths and barriers to participation.

Civics and Government classes engaged in hands-on activities such as “The 5 Myths of Voting” and “Who Decides?” — a competitive and educational game illustrating how decisions made at the local, state, and federal levels directly affect communities. The session encouraged students to think critically about how each vote contributes to shaping the future.

Facilitated by Public Policy Chair DaLisa Delk Cann and Clara, a member of NCNW’s Cuyahoga County Section, the program reached sixty students, with eight successfully completing on-site voter registration. Participants also received nonpartisan resources on polling locations, early voting, and informed decision-making ahead of the 2024 General Election.

This collaboration between NCBW and NCNW reflects a shared mission: to inform, inspire, and empower communities through education and advocacy. Both organizations plan to return later in the school year to continue this vital work with senior students — ensuring Cleveland’s next generation is equipped to become confident, informed, and active voters.
